My doctor also recommended wearing a tampon for stress incontinence, and I found it really did help. (I bought the largest size tampon I could find.)

But I don't need it any more because a month ago I had the monarc sling procedure, and it seems to have completely cured the incontinence.

Anyone who leaks while running (or otherwise jarring your body) probably has stress incontenence. I would recommend that you ask about the surgery. It is day surgery, and for me there was no pain afterwards at all. The stress incontenence was cured immediatly after the surgery.

I can really relate this too! Last year I was in a similar situation, I decided I really wanted to run the local 10k marathon but leaking stopped me. At just 45 I didnt want to be resigned to pads! I tried a number of pelvic exercisers starting with the pelvic-toner (slow) to the Kegel8. A year on and I have completed the Beverley 10k! I still have to use poise light pads at certain times of the month, I have been told this is a sort of hormonal incontinence but my pelvic floor is 100 times better than it was. Good luck, what ever you do - just get out there - with pads or without, don't let this stop you enjoying life!

Hi. I'm a runner too and have been dealing with stress incontinence since the birth of my second child almost two years ago. I had it a little bit when I ran after my first, but it was somewhat bearable (only when I ran). It sucks all around though. Just when you start to get a good stride and the feel-good endorphins start to flow, so does my urine. It takes the self esteem down a few notches with it. Anyway, I hear you about the football analogy. I really appreciate Poise products, but I wish they made one especially for athletes/runners. It needs to be shaped differently or something. One recommendation I have is to run in the morning. I started to do this because I had more time to run, but then I realized my incontinence wasn't as bad because frankly you don't have as much fluid/urine in your body. I only have to wear a medium size or less in the morning when I run (this is before coffee too). Also, my ob/gyn gave me a good tip. Use a tampon when you run, but don't put it in all the way. It sounds really strange, but it works, depending on what your bladder situation is that is. The tampon gives your urethra something to push on for support when it's working...something like this anyway. I hope these help. Whatever you do, don't stop running since it helps so much with self esteem when we have this embarrassing problem to deal with. Good luck!

I can relate. I'm only 26 and have had stress incontinence since I was in high school and playing volleyball. I discovered Poise pads about 5 years ago and they've been pretty good (after initially buying a big package of Depend belted undergarments by mistake, not really realizing what they'd look like-don't ask!). I'm actually having problems with some urge incontinence as well now and will totally soak myself if I'm on a long run or away from a bathroom for any reason for an extended period of time. I wish I had a good piece of advice for you, but I recently bought a package of Poise panties, which really seem to be pretty good.

Boy can I relate to this. I am at the point that I only run on the treadmill at home and when I go to the gym I just walk really fast. For some reason I can walk at about 5 MPH and not leak at all but when I start to run or jog LOOK OUT! It feels so gross and I get so embarrased. I am only 41 years old. I am going to try Poise and see what happens. Id love to be able to do some 1/2 marathons but I can only imagine how bad I would feel crossing the finish line soaked!

I am a walker and must wear a large thick pad or Depends when I go out on a fitness walk. I have stress incon and urgency. I am 47 years old. I wear black shorts/slacks. I walk the 5k and 10k at marathons and always wear protection. It is worse around that time of the month. Last year, they gave us gatorade after the 5k and it was a long wait for the bus and I got soaked. I am overweight which does not help and I hydrate a lot. I have taken walking clinics at a running store and always wear protection for the walk. Bushes will do if I can get away with it in less urban areas. Loose slacks or shorts help. Also extra pads in a knapsack or pocket while exercising. They can be changed discreetly. Sometimes taking a Vitamin C pill before exercising helps since the sodium helps keep liquids in more.

runners?

Jan 28, 2007 4:34 PM
I was just wondering if there are any runners or other athletes reading the posts who experience stress incontinence. I am 33 years old and had bladder repair surgery when I was 25. The surgery is pretty much undone and I am back to experiencing stress incontinence again. On a short run I usually only dribble a bit unless I sprint or have a cold but under those circumstances or on a long run(over an hour) I soak myself. I recently switched from sanitary napkins to poise pads and have noticed a world of difference. I feel much more secure although by the time I am done I feel like I have a football between my legs. Anyone have any tips or coping strategies?
