All the kegels in the world will not prepare your pelvic floor for an episiotomy. If you can at all avoid one do so! There is a risk of tearing your perinium without one, but you usually won't tear muscle. Once they cut the muscle for an episiotomy your pelvic floor will never be the same again. Of course if it is necessary to preserve the baby that's one thing, but I would not risk a life of incontinence for an unnecessary procedure which is done routinely all too often.

As previously stated start Kegels as soon as possible. Make sure you are doing them correctly. You may want to consider if urinary incontinence continues a few months after childbirth to see a Womens Health Specialist at your local Physical Therapy department- you do need a physician's order to do this.

I would start doing kegel exercises now. They want you to do them post partum anyways, so get a head start.
Its bound to happen before you have the baby. As he/she lays on your bladder or gives it a nice kick you are going to pee your pants. I wear a panty liner and had good success with them. Of course a panty liner is not going to hold a full bladder but will protect you alittle bit.

So far so good for me, but just in case that's reassuring that it went away after the pregnancy!

I have three kids - had a bit of leaking around month 6 and beyond for all of them. It went away though. I was pretty good at getting back into shape with abdominal exercises following birth. Worked for me!...

Pregnancy Concerns

Jun 22, 2005 1:20 PM
I am expecting and worried about bladder weakness. I'm not currently experiencing this yet, but I'm only 4+ months into my pregnancy and I know this can happen when you're further along and/or after you deliver.

Does any one have any past experience, tips, etc. that they can share just in case this happens to me?
